An 18 month old boy is in hospital after contracting the Meningococcal B-strain.

SA Health officials are working with staff at the Kesters Road Childcare Centre at Para Hills to ensure anyone in contact with him receives the appropriate care.

A free vaccine for the B-strain is now available for infants aged up to 12 months and a catchup for up to four year olds.

So far this year there's been 31 cases of the infection compared to 35 this time last year.

The boy remains in a stable condition.
