Victorian hospitals, aged care homes and numerous councils are among the customers of a commercial catering company whose food is believed to be spreading a potentially fatal bacteria.

The health department closed I Cook Foods of Dandenong South overnight after meals it provided to a private hospital may have been contaminated with listeriosis, which has been linked to the death of an 80-year-old woman.

Victoria's acting chief Health Officer Brett Sutton told reporters on Friday some of the food was delivered by Meals on Wheels, with potentially thousands of vulnerable people being exposed to the bacteria.
