Menstruation is all about our ability to bring children in to this world, but let’s face it - the cramps, pain, and hormonal changes (the list goes on) kinda sucks.

Not to mention having to buy tampons, etc, every freakin’ month and drain our bank accounts some more.

It’s not always a great experience, but we get to know our bodies and all the facts pretty well… but we bet you didn’t realise that when you’re on your period, there are some animals you should steer clear of.

Due to their keen sense of smell, a lot of animals can detect when you’re on your period (not that they know what a period is), and Broadly recently conducted a study into how our periods affect different animals.

If you’ve got a cat or a dog, stay calm - they’re not going to go crazy and come after you like a shark when you have your period.

As cats and dogs recognise their owners through other senses as well, the change in smell aren’t a huge deal. They’ll still recognise you by voice and sight.

As an interesting side note, some dogs and even been able to detect health conditions!

Other pets like rodents and birds are usually not as accepting of the change in their owner’s smell.

But you needn’t worry about them… instead, here’s the animal you need to be worrying about:

Iguanas.

According to veterinarian Dr. Beth Breitweiser, some male iguanas have been known to attack their owners when they are menstruating.

“Some males get aggressive for whatever reason with these different pheromone levels.

“Especially if you’re at eye level."

Apparently, this smell is similar to that of female iguanas during mating season.

Okay, so it’s not like we’ve all got a pet Iguana hanging around our home, but it’s important to note in case, you know, you go on a holiday to somewhere with lots of Iguanas or try holding one at the zoo…

You never know what might happen.
