A Central Coast man who tried to free a dying woman from a flaming car has been named among the country's bravest today.

Three years ago, Michael Norris of Point Frederick spotted a vehicle which had slammed into a tree on Wilfred Barrett Drive at Noraville.

He tried to free the driver pinned inside, but unfortunately he and another man couldn't get the woman out before the petrol tank exploded.

Mr Norris will be awarded a commendation for brave conduct from Governor-General Peter Cosgrove.
