Head of Australia's Prostate Cancer Foundation, Anne Savage is encouraging local blokes of all ages to have a chat with their GP to make sure they know their risks.
“If you have a family history of disease, we recommend you consider PSA testing from the age of 40 or 45 depending on the strength of your family history. If you don’t have a family history, and you don’t have symptoms, then you should talk to your GP about PSA testing from 50 onwards.”
The risk of prostate cancer increases in older men, the symptoms to look out for include the urgent need to pass urine, which may give off a burning sensation, or have less of a flow.
Speak to your GP if you have any of these symptoms, and for support groups in the Central Coast visit prostate.org.au.
