Cops had to rescue people from flood waters on the Hume highway — the main road between Melbourne and Sydney.

Massive rainfall in Victoria early today cut off parts of the Hume northbound in the Wangaratta region, leading to cops having to pull people out of cars.

Flood waters in the area left cars trapped under sudden surges of floodwater.

The SES had responded to many requests for help in the area:

Further rainfall is expected later tonight and tomorrow.
