After a search of bushland on the Toowoomba Range, police have taken a person of interest into custody after the hunt was on to locate a man who had freed himself from a police van.

Dashcam footage below shows a man attempting to flee police custody on the Toowoomba Range this morning.

It’s alleged that the suspect had escaped from a watch-house escort around 8AM this morning as it was travelling down the Toowoomba Range en-route to Brisbane.

Acting Inspector Jason Hopgood said the prisoner had been violently kicking the door of the van for some time, prompting police to stop and assess the situation.

"As they stopped the vehicle, the male person…. Was able to get out of the vehicle and escape police," he said.

The man was arrested near Holly Street with the aid of the dog squad two hours later, after parts of East Street, East Toowoomba were placed in lockdown.
