Super hot conditions will hang around for a day or two yet, so have you checked on your pets?

North Queensland animals will be feeling these conditions just as much as us, so here's how to manage your pet in a heat wave, and what to do if they're struggling.

How to manage:

Restrict their exercise and walk them only in the early morning or late afternoon when temperatures are cooler

Never leave them in a hot car or room

Ensure they have water and a shaded spot to spend time

Spray them down with cool water

Signs that your pet has heat stroke:

Racing heart

Glassy/fearful expression in their eyes

Heavy panting or excessive drooling

Their gums/tongue are red or purple

Vomiting

Their legs are collapsing or they are staggering when walking

High body temperature

How to manage your pet if they have these signs:

Move them to a cool spot

Offer small amounts of water

Cool them down with a wet towel

Contact your vet

Breeds of dogs that are less tolerant of heat:

Pugs

Bulldogs

Boston Terrier

Pekingese

Boxers

Shih Tzus

French Bulldogs
