A man has pleaded guilty to assaulting another man in Surfers Paradise because he refused to hand over a cigarette.

41-year-old Harry Grillis admitted to the bashing in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

He had already spent 105 days in custody since his arrest back in July 2018.

The court was told how Mr Grillis approached a 60-year-old in broad daylight and asked him for a cigarette, and when the man refused he assaulted him.

He was sentenced to 15 months prison with immediate parole, and ordered to pay $3.50 restitution for stealing a can of Red Bull from a store.
