Mayor Tom Tate has defended Gold Coast City Council's approval of a 20-storey high-rise at Main Beach.

The beachfront apartment building was given the thumbs up by most councillors on Tuesday, despite the fact the site would be built in a medium density area according to the city plan.

The Mayor stated the development is worthy, but admitted he is looking at making changes to the plan to block other high-rises in the area.

"Without a city plan you'll have buildings popping up everywhere," said Cr Tate.

"With the first amendment, we're moving so that these sort of buildings won't occur in that location."
