Merger Plans Scrapped For Alberton And Mid Gippsland Leagues

Following backlash from local clubs

21 October 2018

AFL Victoria has ditched plans to merge the Alberton and Mid Gippsland football/netball leagues for next season.

It follows a massive backlash from many local clubs in response to the announcement earlier this year.

The 2019 season will see Mid Gippsland run with 9 teams after Yarragon moved into the Ellinbank League; while the Alberton Football League will remain with 6 teams.

The AFL Victoria Objection Appeal Panel has requested AFL Gippsland work with the Mid Gippsland, West Gippsland and North Gippsland leagues to accommodate the Alberton League in 2020.

A statement released on Friday states the Alberton clubs may need to be split up to ensure their survival.
