Sydney, brace yourself.

We could be in for at least half of our monthly rainfall in just one day, with heavy rain and storm set to drench us.

Up to 70 millimetres of rain is forecast today, with another 45 millimetres due on Thursday.

Meteorologist Kim Westcott from Weatherzone told the Hit Newsroom it's going to likely hit as we head home from work later on today.

"On top of this, we are also looking at thunderstorms also possible this afternoon and evening," she said.

"The heaviest falls today look to be around the coastal fringe, a little bit lighter in our western suburbs, but still quite heavy at times."
