This morning the season's first box of cherries became WA's most exclusive fruit, as high profile produce retailers went head to head in an auction that would see the winner crowned the Annual Cherry King or Queen at the annual Market City Charity Cherry Auction.

Spudshed's Tony Galati is today's winner, taking home his 5kg box of fresh cherries for a cool $100,000, and of course, the title of Cherry King.

In total the auction raised a record-breaking $135,450 for the Perth Children's Hospital Foundation and the establishment of a world-leading Centre of Excellence for Childhood Burns.

The generosity and support of WA’s fresh produce industry for this event continues to be phenomenal, and has enabled the Foundation to provide grants for specialist medical equipment, expertise and research.

Last year's auction raised close to $100,000, Cherry King John Ale forking out a staggering $51,000 for a 1 kilogram box of cherries donated by the Cherry Growers' Association of WA.
