Parks Victoria explained the unusual colour on Facebook:
“The natural phenomenon is in response to very high salt levels, high temperatures, sunlights and a lack of rainfall.
“The algae growing in the salt crust at the bottom of the lake produces the red pigment as part of its photosynthesis process and in response to the extremely high salt levels.”
As it is a natural occurrence, the lake is not harmful to wildlife.
It’s hard to predict when the pink hue will disappear, so our advice is to check it out ASAP. Parks Victoria ask that visitors stay on the designated footpaths and don’t walk on the edge of the lake.
