Footage has surfaced online of a woman warning of the dangers of consuming hot cross buns before driving, claiming that the snack could put you over the limit.

In the viral clip, the woman blows 0.00 before taking a bite of a hot cross bun.

After finishing the mouthful, she then took a second reading, with this one coming in at 0.18.

While she claimed that this would put her over the limit, it turns out that a lot of different types of food can cause an increased reading - which is why police officers will wait 15 minutes before testing.

A NSW police spokesperson told the Hit Network that this will be communicated to the driver.

Police in NSW will generally ask the driver if they have had a drink in the last 15 minutes, or anything else that could affect the reading. If so, police would ensure 15 minutes has passed before they do the breath test, to ensure any residual mouth alcohol has dissipated.

This view has also been reflected in the comments, with many people supporting the fact that certain foods can trigger a false reading immediately after eating.
