Tough penalties have been introduced for people who ignore total fire bans in Western Australia, with repeat offenders facing a fine of up to $25,000 and/or imprisonment for 12 months.

Emergency Services Minister Fran Logan on Tuesday also announced new $1000 on-the-spot fines for people who breach the bans.

Last bushfire season, 76 fires on total fire ban days were started as a result of burn offs, campfires and using machinery that creates a spark.
